Banco Nacional Ultramarino, S.A. (BNU) was founded in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1864. In 1988, Caixa Geral de Depósitos, S.A., Portugal ("CGD"), became the major shareholder of BNU. CGD is the largest state-owned financial services group in Portugal.

In 2001, the merger of BNU and CGD, through incorporation of the first into the latter, was announced. In accordance with the merger plan and as of July 1st, 2001, the Macau Branch of BNU became a wholly owned subsidiary of CGD and incorporated in Macau SAR as a bank.

Both as commercial and issuing bank, BNU has strongly contributed over the past century to the economic and social development of Macau. The Bank remains a notes issuer and Agent of the Macau Treasury.

The establishment of Banco Nacional Ultramarino, S.A. Shanghai Representative Office was authorized by the China Banking Regulatory Commission, Beijing on 16th February 2006.

Having obtained all regulatory approvals from different government departments in Shanghai, the office starts its operation in Shanghai on May 10, 2006. Its main activity is to provide information, market surveys and liaison services for the Head Office.
